First developed in the 1950s, laser technology has evolved over the decades to become a key part of our lives. We use lasers in medicine, manufacturing, defence, and even things like laser light shows and movie special effects!
Although there are countless types out there, medical-use lasers can be loosely sorted into one of two categories: hot or cold. Hot lasers are typically used for surgical applications, while cold lasers are used for less invasive medical treatments.
Thanks to our years of experience, the team at Illusion Laser Clinic have an in-depth understanding of all types of laser technology. Read on for our guide to the qualities of hot and cold lasers, what they’re typically used for, and the pros and cons of each!
What is a cold laser?
A cold laser, also known as a Class 2 or 3 laser, is a low-power laser used to stimulate healing in damaged tissues. This process is known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT).
Unlike surgical lasers, which use high-power beams to cut or vaporise tissue, cold lasers emit a low-intensity beam that doesn’t generate heat and isn’t strong enough to damage cells. The laser light is absorbed by the cells in the targeted area, promoting cellular metabolism and circulation, reducing inflammation, and accelerating the natural healing process.
Cold lasers are typically used for non-invasive treatments such as laser tattoo removal, topical pain treatment, and body contouring.
What is a hot laser?
A hot laser (or Class 4 laser) has a power output above 500 milliwatts (mW). They’re called ‘hot’ because they can rapidly increase the temperature of body tissue.
At a lower power range, hot lasers are used to treat pain through tissue and muscle relaxation – this is called high-intensity laser therapy (HILT). Higher-intensity hot lasers are much more powerful and are used during surgery to cut tissue, seal blood vessels, and vaporise tumours.
What are the pros and cons of cold lasers?
Pros:
- Non-invasive: Cold lasers do not involve cutting or damaging the skin, making them a non-invasive option for many conditions.
- Improved healing: Studies have shown that cold laser therapy can promote tissue repair and regeneration. This is what makes it effective at treating scarring, stretch marks, wrinkles, and other skin concerns.
- Pain relief: Cold laser therapy has been shown to reduce pain in some cases, particularly chronic pain.
- Few side effects: Cold laser therapy is considered very safe and has few reported side effects.
Cons:
- Not a cure-all: While cold laser therapy can be helpful for certain conditions, it’s not a cure-all and may not be effective for all types of pain or injuries.
- Multiple sessions may be needed: Although some people find that a single session of cold laser therapy is sufficient, multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve the full benefits of the treatment.
What are the pros and cons of hot lasers?
Hot lasers are powerful tools used in various surgical and industrial applications. Here are their potential pros and cons:
Pros:
- Less invasive than surgery: Hot lasers can sometimes be used in place of traditional surgical techniques, resulting in less damage to surrounding tissues and a shorter recovery time.
- Reduced bleeding: Hot lasers can cauterise blood vessels, reducing bleeding and the need for sutures.
Cons:
- Tissue damage: The intense energy produced by hot lasers can cause tissue damage if used improperly or at the wrong setting. This can result in scarring, pain, or other complications.
- Eye damage: Laser radiation can cause damage to the eyes if protective eyewear is not used properly.
Whichever laser treatment you choose, it’s important to have it performed by a qualified healthcare professional with the appropriate training and experience.
