Understanding the Basics: Botox vs Dermal Fillers

Aesthetics clinic

In the world of non-surgical aesthetic treatments, Botox™ and dermal fillers are two of the most popular options. Both treatments offer a way to rejuvenate the face and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines without the need for surgery. However, despite their similarities, Botox and dermal fillers are quite different in terms of their composition, mechanism of action, and results. In this article, we will provide a comprehensive comparison between Botox and dermal fillers to help you make an informed decision about choosing which treatment is right for you at Illusion Laser Clinic

What are they made of and how do they work?

Botox™ and dermal fillers are both injectable treatments that are used to improve the appearance of the skin.

Botox™

Botox™ is a brand name for botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin that is used to temporarily paralyse the muscles that cause wrinkles.

Botox™ is made from a purified form of botulinum toxin A, a protein that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected into the muscles, Botox™ blocks the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that causes the muscles to contract. This results in temporary paralysis of the treated muscles, which leads to a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles. When these muscles are relaxed, the skin on top of them smooths out, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. The effects of Botox™ usually last for about 3-6 months, after which the muscles will gradually regain their ability to contract, and the wrinkles will reappear.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are gel-like substances that are injected into the skin to fill in wrinkles and add volume to areas of the face that have lost volume due to ageing.

They are made from a variety of substances, but the most common type of filler is made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps to maintain its hydration and volume. Other types of fillers include calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, and polymethylmethacrylate.

Dermal fillers work by adding volume to the skin. When injected, the filler plumps up the treated area, filling in wrinkles and restoring lost volume. The effects of dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the type of filler used and the area treated.

Where can they be applied and who can get it?

Botox™

Botox™ is most commonly used to treat dynamic wrinkles, which are wrinkles that form as a result of repeated muscle movements. Common areas for Botox injections include the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes (crow’s feet).

The ideal candidates for Botox™ are individuals who have dynamic wrinkles that they would like to reduce. Botox™ is suitable for most skin types and can be used by both men and women. However, it is not recommended for individuals with certain neuromuscular disorders, such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are used to treat static wrinkles, which are wrinkles that are present even when the face is at rest. Common areas for dermal filler injections include the cheeks, nasolabial folds (the lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth), and the lips.

The ideal candidates for dermal fillers are individuals who have static wrinkles or areas of the face that have lost volume due to ageing. Dermal fillers are suitable for most skin types and can be used by both men and women. However, they are not recommended for individuals with certain allergies or skin conditions.

What are the side effects?

Botox™

As with many treatments, there is always a chance of side effects. The most common side effects of Botox™ include bruising, swelling, and pain at the injection site. Other potential side effects include headache, flu-like symptoms, and drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow.

Dermal Fillers

Even the perfect candidate for this treatment can experience some side effects. The most common side effects of dermal fillers include bruising, swelling, and pain at the injection site. Other potential side effects include lumps or bumps in the treated area, discolouration of the skin, and infection.

What are the costs?

The cost of Botox™ and dermal fillers varies depending on the provider, the area being treated, and the amount of product used. On average, Botox™ costs between £150-£350 per area treated, while dermal fillers cost between £200-£500 per syringe. To further explore our pricing information, click here.
